Self-Awareness and Meditation Course

Lesson Six

Gaining Greater Self-awareness during the Day

In the last lesson we looked at how to observe oneself throughout the day by bringing awareness to the present moment in time and place. We also looked at how to be a 'witness' to what you are doing and what is happening around you and to watch, observe and get a picture of yourself, as you are, now.

Through self observation certain traits and characteristics will come to light. In particular there will be ideas, desires and emotions which you will realise are not serving your aspiration to be more in tune with your higher 'Self'. This is really spiritual energy which has become attached to the ideas, desires and emotions to form emotional energy.

Fortunately, there are techniques which can be used to release the spiritual energy from emotional energy, thus clearing the emotion and allowing the spiritual energy to be consciously used for higher purposes. I will outline these techniques in this lesson.

The Self-awareness formula for greater spiritual awareness

  1. Take note of the troubling memory which comes to mind. This can be in meditation or in quiet reflection during the day.

  2. Visualise all aspects of the event (thoughts, emotions, desires) which are aroused when contemplating it.

  3. Go over the event, again and again, as fully as possible so that all ideas and feelings associated with it are maximised.

  4. Notice how the emotional energy is at the command of the desire or idea associated with the event and not at your conscious command. Thoroughly observe this so that it becomes obvious to you.

  5. Throwing the light of consciousness onto this situation is healing in itself as you are already one step further detached from the memory than on previous occasions. You realise that your emotional energy is at the command of a memory of an event and not the event itself.

  6. Consciously release the memory repeating to yourself a positive affirmation such as "Here and now, in this moment, I am free" The affirmation needs to be focused on the present moment and positive in its wording. The greater your intention for healing the greater the effect.

The idea is to release the energy from negative emotion so that you can move on to greater spiritual awareness. Sometimes the energy release will be so noticeable that you will suddenly feel uplifted. The technique above is not dissimilar from those used by EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) and TFT (Thought Field Therapy). With both of these it has been shown that focusing an an undesirable emotion, phobia, fear, etc and then tapping on a sequence of energy meridians on the body while repeating an affirmation can release the emotion dramatically. Nobody is really sure, however, to what extent the tapping is necessary. It seems to be the intention that really counts in all of these techniques while the mechanical act of tapping helps the process along.
